How Key Fob Programming is Done

September 18, 2023

The key fob of your car enables you to control your car using a remote control. From a distance, you can open or lock your car, open the truck, and control the other doors.

Sometimes your key fob can stop working. It does not mean that the key fob is damaged or needs to be replaced. The problem could be with the programming. It is possible that it has lost the programming data.

When this happens, it means that you need to reprogram it. Fob reprogramming will make it work again.

When you also buy a new key fob, it does not automatically start working with your car. It needs to be programmed to recognize and activate your car.

Programming Differs

You can not program all key fobs the same way. The procedure differs according to the type of car you have. However, you can program most cars using a similar method. If you need a specific method that works for the model of your car, check the manual.

You can program some keys by yourself. It is simply because the manufacturers designed them that way. However, for others, you would need to employ the services of professionals to program it for you.

How to Know That Your Key Can Be Self-programmed

It is quite easy to tell that your car is self-programmable. The first point of call should be the car’s manual. Usually, there should be a section of it that talks about the key fob. It will contain instructions on how you can program it.

You can also call your local automotive locksmith to inquire if your car is self-programmable. If it is, you can ask for instructions on how to program it. You could receive the instructions via mail or you could pick up a printed copy of it.

How to Program Your Key

Before you program, ensure that the battery is fully charged to power it. The first step in programming is to enter your car in the driver’s seat and shut the doors. The locking of the door should prevent the disruption of the process.

While you are inside the car, put the key in the ignition and turn it ON. Press the lock icon on the key fob and turn the ignition back to OFF. Repeat this process as much as four times in rapid succession. End it with the ignition being ON.

You will hear the car lock sound. You can now test to see that the programming has been successful.

Do You Need Hardware to Program Your Key?

Sometimes it will be difficult to program your key. This means that you would need special hardware before you can program your key. When this happens, seek professional help.

Programming the key could be easy or difficult depending on the model and manufacturer of your car. However, irrespective of that, you have a reliable automotive locksmith in Phoenix, Arizona. We offer professional key replacement and programming services. Allow us to take the stress off you and handle the programming process.
